In francese, il termine per i costumi da gara è combinaison, combinazione. Ci fu un’epoca in cui si parlò di nuoto più per i costumi che per i protagonisti: gli anni dei costumoni in poliuretano. Alain Bernard ha vissuto quell’epoca, vinse l’oro olimpico nei 100 stile a Pechino 2008, come gli anni immediatamente precedenti e successivi “Se i gommati hanno cambiato fisicamente i nuotatori? Non credo. Quantomeno, non è solo questione di costumi” dichiara in un’intervista tête-à-tête a Swimbiz.it, durante la presentazione della sua partnership con Aqua Sphere a Genova(leggi qui). Per l’ex velocista francese, il nuoto è ed è sempre stato una combinazione di fattori “Cambia il modo di allenarsi: era diverso cinque anni fa e lo sarà tra dieci. Anche oggi ci sono nuotatori massicci come Magnussen o Manaudou – e per il futuro – ne sono certo, pima o poi si tornerà al costume intero, senza certe esagerazioni del passato”. Difficile indicare il prossimo campione olimpico nella velocità “McEvoy sarà sul podio, forse li nuoterà anche Florent Manaudou – leader anche per il futuro? – se continuerà dopo Rio 2016, e credo di sì, ne ha le capacità. E’ il più titolato della nazionale, che sta vivendo un momento difficile, ma con i duri criteri imposti dal ct sarà meno numerosa, ma più competitiva”. Bernard non usa mai l’intercalare c’est genial tanto caro ai giovani francesi, nuotatori compresi. Quelle generazioni acquatiche ispirate da lui e Laure Manaudou “La storia recente del nuoto francese è simile a quella italiana. Come Rosolino, Fioravanti, Pellegrini da voi, la nostra generazione ha reso il nuoto mediatico”. Prima, i nuotatori in Francia erano visti come rigidi e seriosi. Poi arrivò l’oltre vasca: gossip, tv, copertine, tatuaggi… improvvisamente, il nuoto per i giovani francesi era cool “La popolarità dei nuotatori in Francia è seconda solo al calcio. E penso che Federica Pellegrini sia la massima espressione, non solo in Italia, del nuoto superstar”. Lo sa bene Bernard, anche uomo di televisione come commentatore per Eurosport (ma per Rio 2016 non è ancora ufficiale). E’ stato gendarme, è single ma vorrebbe sposarsi e la sua passione è pilotare aerei “No, non ho smesso dopo quel terribile incidente in Argentina(leggi qui). Può sembrare egoistico, ma la verità è che va accettato come una fatalità, come un incidente stradale. Ho preso forza da chi mi sta intorno. Paradossalmente, ora ho ancor più voglia di vivere – come il suo ricordo di Camille Muffat – una campionessa straordinaria, una ragazza con un’immensa gioia di vivere”.

Alain Bernard "Sure, swimsuits will come back to full body. After the accident, my will of living is even stronger"
French word for race swimnsuits is combinaison, combination. There was an age when people talked about swimming more for swimsuits than for swimmers: years of polyurethane. Alain Bernard lived those days (he won the Olympic gold medal in 100 m freestyle at Beijing 2008 Olympics Games) as also previous and next years “I don’t’ think that ‘super swimsuits’ morphologically changed swimmers – he says, in a one-to-one interview with Swimbiz.it, during official presentation of his partnership with Italian swimwear brand Aqua Sphere – or they weren’t the only reason". According to him, swimming haa always been a combination of factors "What really changed is training: the way swimmers train today is very different from 5 years ago, and will change again in the next ten years. Nowadays there are massive swimmers too, like Magnussen or Manaudou”. Looking at the future “I’m sure that, one day or another, male swimmers will come back to full body, but without some exagerations of past”. It’s hard to predict next Olympic king of 100 m free “I think McEvoy will reach podium, Florent Manaudou could swim it too – leader of french swimming for he next years? – if he doesnt' leave swimming after Rio 2016, and I think he won't leave, he surely can be that leader: he’s our most titled swmmer. French national team is not in an easy moment, but team for Rio 2016 will be less numerous than usual and very competitive”. Bernard never uses the expression c’est genial, so common among French young boys, swimmers too. Those “aquatic” generations inspired by him and Laure Manaudou “Most recent years of fench and Italian swimming are very similar: just like Rosolino, Fioravanti and Pellegrini in Italy, we made French swimming mass mediatic”. Before them, swimmer were mostly considered ‘square and stuffy’ by young French. Than, it was the time of ‘over pool’: gossip, tv, covers, tattoos… suddenly, swimming was cool “Swimmer’s popularity in France is probably second only to football. Federica Pellegrini could be considered, not only in Italy, the perfect example of swimmer superstar”. And Bernard knows mass media's world very well, being a sport commentator for Eurosport (but nothing is official yet for Rio 2016). He’s been a gendarme (military police), he’s single but plans to marry in the future and his passion is to pilot planes “No, I didn’t’ stop after that terrible accident in Argentina. Could sound egoistic to say, but the truth is that it must be considered a fataliy of life, just as a car accident. People around me gave me strength and, paradoxically, now my will of living is even stronger than before – just like his best memory of Camille Muffat – an extraordinary champion, a girl with an incredible joy for life”.
